BCG booster dose: High hopes from this 100 year old vaccine, treatment of corona and diabetes will also be possible!

BCG booster dose: The ongoing research on coronavirus in India has proved that after some time such people especially need a booster dose of corona who are physically weak or old age. But now the matter is being prepared for a booster dose of a vaccine that is more than 100 years old. Indian scientists are now researching whether the BCG vaccine can give protection against diabetes and corona. This research is being done in India and ICMR is working on it.

The main objective of this research was to see whether people with TB can be saved from TB by applying a booster dose of BCG. But research also revealed that this vaccine is also giving protection against diabetes. In this research being done in India, it will also be researched whether this vaccine, which gives immunity to newborns, is protecting against diabetes as well as the coronavirus. If this happens, then this BCG vaccine can prove to be a medicine for many diseases.

Now preparations are being made for the booster dose of the BCG vaccine. Till now people in India know this vaccine as an essential vaccine for immunization of newborns, but soon both the importance and identity of this vaccine may change. After the research is stamped, soon people can be given a booster dose of BCG along with the booster dose of the corona.

The National Institute of Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT), an organization of ICMR, has made preparations for research. Children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years who have been in contact with TB patients will be included in this research. They will be given a booster dose of the BCG vaccine and the results will be studied. The research will assess whether a booster dose of the BCG vaccine can protect someone from getting TB despite exposure to the disease.

According to Dr. Padma-Priyadarshini C, Director, National Institute of Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT-Chennai), this research will be done on 9 thousand of children who have a TB patients at home. These teenagers will be monitored for 2 years. This research will be done in 8 cities in the country and the study is expected to start in August this year. BCG vaccine is given to the child from the time of birth to before the age of one year. This vaccine is part of the national vaccination campaign in India. According to NIRT researcher Dr. Shri Ram, this vaccine works to increase immunity and has been considered effective in protecting against lung diseases, especially TB. Now its benefits are also coming out in diabetes and covid.

The BCG vaccine was invented in 1920. During the ongoing research on this vaccine at Howard Medical College, researchers from time to time got indications that this vaccine is also reducing the risk of many other diseases. Be it an auto-immune disorder like multiple sclerosis or type 1 diabetes from birth. According to research published last year in the Indian Journal of Applied Research, the BCG vaccine is also protecting against corona. This research was done in 2021 at the Government Hospital in Noida.

The challenge is also big for India because there are about 80 million patients with diabetes in the country. Of these, 2.5 lakh people have type 1 diabetes. That is diabetes from birth. India ranks second in the world in terms of diabetes. Similarly, there are more than 19 lakh TB patients in India. India has the highest number of TB patients in the world. The government wants to eliminate TB by 2025. But in the last year i.e. in 2021 itself, there has been an increase of 19 percent in the number of TB patients. In such a situation, if this research gives good results, then the country can get success in the case of TB, diabetes, and corona.
